Umbra is an interdisciplinary lab and online experimental school — for children that desire
to explore, to create and to build.
Open to children ages 6–16
Umbra was born from a radical belief: the village that raises a child and the laboratory where that child experiments and creates are not separate things. They are one.
We think education should not separate the philosopher from the builder, the thinker from the maker, a child's wonder from adult's rigour.
We believe that a major part of the world's future can be incubated in the young minds of today's Africa. Our goal is to groom them for civilisation level ambition.
"We want to create a laboratory for children to explore and create beauty, wonder and goodness — and harness the child's ability to dream, to wander in wonder, for good."
To raise philosopher builders and artists — and incubate noble geniuses with the moral fibre and integrity to advance our communities.
We envision a future where Africa does not receive the world's innovations — it originates them. Where the next great frontier is traced back to a child who was given space to wonder in Umbra.
Not just brilliant minds. Brilliant and good minds. Philosopher Engineers. Redemptive Builders. Artists with truth. The Umbra child is a genius of the finest kind.
Every Umbra child is also a child of a family. We draw families into the lab, making the home part of the village.
We have an ambitious goal to usher a civilization of wonder, beauty and awe through art, science, engineering, leadership and learning.
We know that the African child is capable of stewarding that level of ambition. The dream is to see the African child create without barriers and explore without boundaries — and Umbra Labs is an origin point to birthing that dream.
We believe that intelligence plus character is true education, so we are crafting a learning environment that pays attention to a child's inner formation, sharpens the child's intelligence, and encourages creativity. Umbra is the fruit of sturdy belief that the African child is very capable and no knowledge is too sophisticated.
We have crafted a deep framework for the village and for work (the laboratory), developed philosophies to guide the outcome we want to see in the African child. Umbra is a labour of love — we urge you to come along this journey in building Africa and the African child.
It takes a village to raise the child, the inner lab serves as a foundation course for every umbra child The inner lab takes the role of village to provide the nurturing, the identity, the belonging — the moral and emotional ground from which genius forms.
Four paths. Endless frontiers. At the Laboratory the child has four paths to choose from. The lab is where the dreamer becomes the builder, here the child learns, experiments, prototypes, iterates and builds.
Geniuses with moral fibre and integrity — the Picassos, Benjamin Franklins, Aristotles of their walk of life.
Children who interrogate first principles. Who ask why before they ask how. Whose thinking shapes the ethical architecture of the world they inherit — and then remake.
Children who create beauty with intention. Who make things that move people and endure. Who understand that art is not decoration — it is civilisation made visible.
Children who build things that actually work. Who are unafraid to experiment and fail. Who bring ingenuity and moral purpose to every prototype, every product, every invention.
Four laboratories. Each a portal into a different world of building, thinking, and creating. Children choose a path — then build along it, with mentors, with peers, with purpose.
A lab for world-builders and civilisation architects. Children think in systems, imagine alternative futures, and design for societies they wish to inhabit. In this lab, children explore the intersection of speculative design and strategic foresight.
A living laboratory for culture engineering, civic participation, identity, and community. Children explore How to practically create systems for belonging, leadership, service — and build societies that dignify every person. .
Think of this as a cultural architecture lab, the intent is to create layers and structures to improve societal health and lifestyle. At the Media lab we explore how motion images, storytelling and media can be wielded to rebuild the social imagination.
Where builders are made. Children design and engineer products, systems, and structures — grounded in craft, function, and beauty. From code to circuits, from architecture to art — this lab makes makers of tomorrow.
Umbra welcomes children who dream — who ask too many questions, who build things in their heads, who are restless with wonder. If that is your child, this is their home.
